Dr. Shiva Devkota, a prominent mycologist and lichenologist, will join International Mountain Trekking's July 2025 trek into Nepal's Langtang region. Dr. Devkota is highly regarded for his extensive research on mushrooms and lichens in South Asia, including his work on the prized caterpillar fungus (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), renowned for its medicinal properties. His contributions to the field have earned him international recognition, including the naming of a new lichen species, Lobaria devkotae, in his honor.
During the trek, Dr. Devkota will conduct interactive workshops with participants, focusing on the identification of local mushrooms and lichens, while exploring their medicinal uses and ecological significance. Trekkers will have the unique opportunity to learn from his vast knowledge of the Langtang Valley’s mycological diversity and flora, gaining insight into the region’s ecology and the role of fungi and lichens in traditional healing practices.
